The Repair Process:

With peak season underway and significant storm damage on their hands, the campground lodge’s management needed a contractor who could do it all — and do it right, the first time. Our team at Klaus Roofing Systems of Cincinnati stepped in with a comprehensive, turn-key solution that tackled every issue from the roof to the foundation.

Roofing System Replacement

The storm had left the existing metal roof compromised and unreliable. We removed the old system and rebuilt from the deck up, starting with repairs to any damaged sheathing. We installed a synthetic underlayment — a non-breathable, water- and vapor-retardant barrier that far outperforms traditional felt — to create a resilient base layer beneath the new roof.

To protect vulnerable areas such as eaves and valleys, we applied IKO StormShield Ice & Water Barrier, then installed 28-gauge performance metal roofing panels with galvanized screws, along with custom-fitted rake and eave flashing for added moisture protection.

Concrete Slab Installation

While not storm-related, the existing concrete slab at the rear of the property was poorly poured and uneven — a tripping hazard and an eyesore. Since the lodge was already closed for repairs, management asked us to replace it. We prepped the area and poured a 7’ x 24’ x 4” concrete slab, reinforced with rebar for strength. A broom finish was applied for traction, and we matched the color as closely as possible to blend with the existing hardscape.

Structural Repairs & Finishing

Several areas of the lodge required structural intervention:

Kitchen Wall: We jacked up both sides of the beam to level it, added six 2x4 posts under the joint, reframed the wall, and ran new wiring through the studs.
Storage Room: All damaged framing and decking were removed and rebuilt. We reframed rafters and overhangs, installed new decking and underlayment, and painted the entire room and ceiling for a clean, finished result.
Kitchen Overhang: Damaged framing was removed, new rafter tails were sistered in to create a uniform 1’ overhang, and we installed new fascia and rake boards.
Fireplace Wall: Due to a failed footer, we recommended and completed a full wall tear-down for safety and future reliability.
Pavilion Trim: We removed deteriorated posts and installed clean trim to enclose and finish the opening.

Handrail Replacement

The original aluminum handrails were damaged beyond repair. We removed the existing rails and installed 100 linear feet of new, like-kind black aluminum handrails and posts, including sections along stairs, to restore safety and meet code requirements.

Roof Giveaway to First Responder - Contest Summary!

We paired with our friends over at WEBN to give away a new roof, to a first responder in need. WEBN agreed to handle the promotion, and we agreed to handle the roof. We received several hundred entries to the contest, which allowed for friends and families to nominate their deserving first responders. It was a month-long promotion which included radio broadcasts, podcast, and social media mentions including their webform on the website. Kidd Chris, the host of the AM drive time show on WEBN, called the randomly selected winner with our owner Michael Schaffer to let them know that they had won a new roof. The winner, Derek, was ecstatic to know that he was selected. He confirmed that he has been a Police Officer for the Cincinnati Police Department for four years, and that his wife had nominated him. He told us that he’s had his home for around a year, and that his roof has had leaking issues. Him and his wife, who is a Developmental Disability Specialist, make quite the “power couple” as said best by radio personality Kidd Chris. After letting Derek know he had won, we went over the specifics of the plan for his new roof and when we should install it.

On the day of the install, we immediately saw just how much Derek was sacrificing for his commitment to his community. Derek was getting home from his police work at the same time we came out to install the new roof at 8:00 in the morning. Derek informed us that he works overnight shifts and that he was going to sleep while we installed the roof. Being the kind young man that he is, Derek said, “Don’t worry about being too loud.”

We then got to work on the installation of Derek's new roof. Derek's son, who’s around two years of age, watched us curiously out the window with his mom close by, who is expecting their second child any day. Our team of around 12 people were able to knock out the new roof in about seven hours, and we finished the installation around 3:00 PM. We ended by taking a couple of nice photos with the young family and feeling a great sense of gratitude.

To properly waterproof this low-slope roof, we recommended a full-coverage installation of our KRS Sealoron Ice & Water Shield underlayment. Roofing:

We started the roofing process by stripping the existing roof down to the sheathing. From there, we replaced parts of the decking that needed replacing to be able to ensure our warranties. We make sure to stay clean by laying down some tarp from the roof down to the dumpster, where we discarded everything.We then taped all the seams of the decking with a four inch MFM tape. We then installed IKO Ice and Water Shield six feet up on all drip edges, walls, chimneys, and valleys. This underlayment is great at protecting the roofs most susceptible parts from water and ice. We then installed our synthetic underlayment everywhere else. After the underlayments, we then installed IKO Dynasty AR shingles in a Charcoal Gray shade all over the roof. Lastly, we installed the details like new flashing, perma boots, vents, and aluminum edges.

Gutters:

After the roof was complete, we then moved to installing new six inch seamless aluminum gutters. We also installed new downspouts to match. We also had to install new fascia wood and new rake boards to be able to install the vinyl soffits.

Siding:

We removed the existing siding down to the sheathing, and replaced the sheathing that was affected by water. We then wrapped the sides with Homewrap to protect against moisture. We then installed new vinyl siding in a color they chose.

We began prepping the duplexes by laying tarps across the yards to catch any falling debris. On all the homes, we stripped away two layers of old shingles. While layering shingles might seem beneficial, it actually shortens a roof’s lifespan by trapping heat - exactly what had happened here.

Once the shingles were removed, we inspected the decking and replaced any compromised sections. Next, we applied decking tape along all seams. This step not only improves waterproofing but also helps us map out where the two types of underlayment will be separated.

Our first layer was KRS Sealoron XT Premium Ice & Water Shield, installed two feet in from the roof’s perimeter, where rainfall is heaviest. This fully adhered membrane bonds to the decking with a glue-like backing that self-seals around each nail, providing superior leak protection. For the remainder of the roof, we installed KRS Velora One synthetic underlayment, mechanically fastened with plastic caps for durability.

We used a special shingle from IKO. Their Nordic line is a shingle designed to bend around a curved surface, without compromising the integrity of the shingle. The homeowner had no idea how her problem would be fixed when Klaus Roofing showed up that day. By the end of the meeting, she could not wait to get the process started. The crew started by stripping the old shingles, underlayment, and inspecting all wood decking underneath. Our crew flew up to Contractor Nation's headquarters in Connecticut this past weekend to learn, network, recognize other dealers, and have fun!

On Friday we started the day with classes at the convention center. The first class was a general session where we were able to learn from David Horsager, a New York Times best seller and a professor of trust. He made us think deeply about how trust works and not only how it applies to our professional lives, but also our personal lives. After the general session we then split up classes based onto our departments. In these breakout sessions with our specific departments, we were able to connect with people with the same professions at other dealers across the country. After these classes, we headed to our awards dinner where we recognize the hard work of everyone through the network, including ourselves. We had greater rankings than last year and it was great to see our hard work pay off. Next year we aim for even higher. Other awards were given out including a community-based award, which we were nominated for because of our DragonFly sponsorship.

On Saturday we were able to break away from the convention center and visit the Contractor Nation campus, located in a beautiful and hilly Connecticut country side. This campus is where all our products are manufactured, tested, marketed, and sold. It was really interesting to tour the campus and be able to see the history of it all. We then had more breakout classes where we really got to get technical and learn. Contractor Nation was so kind to provide us with great food, gear, education, and transportation.

To sum it all up, this was a great learning experience for us. It also really showed us just how extensive of a network we have at Contractor Nation. We will be ready to compete and learn again next year! We are constantly learning and absorbing resources to better help you, the customer!

The Evolution of Roofing Underlayment

Building codes are constantly changing to ensure that structures such as your home are built safely. This includes everything down to the underlayment on your roof. Follow us as we travel through time and see how underlayment has changed throughout the years.

The earliest known record of roofing dates back to 3000 B.C. in China.

Humans have been using roofs for millions of years. The original purpose was to move water and snow quickly off and away from the top of the house. This came in many different forms. Homes were built with slate, thatch, clay tile, or wood shingles. It wasn’t until the 19th century that more than one layer of roofing material began to gain popularity.

How the California Gold Rush Revolutionized Roofing

Along with the gold rush came the invention of tar paper. As individuals migrated west in hopes of finding riches, the ability to build houses and towns quickly became very important. Tar paper was cheap and offered some level of waterproofing.

As you can imagine, tar paper alone was insufficient to keep the mining shanties dry for a long time. Finally, in 1903, asphalt shingles were invented in Grand Rapids, MI. There was just one small problem. The wood used for sheathing was typically made of white pine or cedar. The sap from the wood caused the asphalt shingles to deteriorate more quickly than they expected. So, they put tar paper over the wood to protect the asphalt shingles.

The Test of Time

The tar paper was a great way to protect the asphalt shingles. However, it did little to protect the roof from water damage. The material tore easily. If the roof leaked, it offered little in the way of protecting the interior of the home, and the tar paper deteriorated quickly. Over the decades, roof installation contractors tried using thicker paper.

Eventually, the roof installers caught on to the use of asbestos. This material seemed great because of its water resistance and durability. As the asbestos industry grew, so did the realization of its hazards. Companies started using less of it, and eventually, in 1989, the EPA attempted to ban the product. That ban was overturned in 1991, but by then roof installation companies were already starting to phase the use of asbestos out.

In America, the link between cancer and asbestos came to light during the 1930s. Creating regulations around the product was slow, but it did scare some manufacturers in the roofing industry to think of other ways to create a waterproof underlayment. Enter the fiberglass shingle in the year 1960. This material was good for its water resistance at first, but unlike asphalt shingles, they couldn’t stand up against the wind and freezing temperatures. They didn’t last.

Modern Roofing Materials

An equivalent of tar paper is still used today. The product is now called "asphalt felt." The concept is the same. Recycled corrugated paper and sawdust are combined to create felt, and asphalt is then infused into the paper to provide it with water resistance. It still has a lot of the same problems that it had 200 years ago. The product still tears easily. While the asphalt felt does offer some water resistance, it does not stand up to the test of time like the new and superior products we offer, such as our self-adhering modified bitumen underlayment.

Synthetic underlayments are relatively new in the construction world. It was only made a little over 20 years ago. It offers the water resistance and safety that roofing underlayments have been lacking for millennia!

Can Your Roof Handle The Heat?

Growing up, the house I lived in had a finished attic. It was always too hot or too cold up there. I just figured it was based on a lack of airflow from the HVAC system. So, when my husband and I purchased our first house in 2019, we didn’t think much about the temperature upstairs. The HVAC unit was old, so we figured when it died we’d just buy a better one and that would improve the upstairs temperature.

On top of that, it was spring when we walked through the house with our inspector. He did warn us that it would get hotter, but we couldn’t really gauge just how hot the 2nd floor would get in the summer. Three years and one child later, the summer temperature is very apparent.

Upstairs we have bedrooms and an unfinished portion of the attic where I store my crafting supplies. We always keep that room closed off from the rest of the upstairs because the temperature differential is easily 5-10 degrees colder or hotter. One day this past summer, I went into the unfinished portion of our attic to get something. The heat hit me in the face like a brick wall. As I walked across the room, I noticed some outside light entering. I knew that couldn’t be good. When I looked to see where the light was coming from, I found that the decking of my roof had come apart from the rest of the house.

I knew right then and there I would need a roof repair contractor. My first choice was, of course, Klaus Roofing of Cincinnati. For training purposes, my husband and I met with Kent and Jeff. They found many things on my roof that the previous roof installers had done wrong, but the one that struck me most was the lack of proper ventilation. Then Jeff explained to me that the temperature differential was so great because my attic was improperly ventilated.

Types of Ventilation

During our presentation, Kent explained to us that there are multiple types of ventilation systems a roof can have. Klaus Roofing of Cincinnati uses passive systems, meaning those that don’t use electricity to remove warm air from the house. Some of these systems we use, others we do not. The most common types of passive ventilation systems are ridge vents, box vents, off ridge vents, gable-end vents, and soffit vents.

Soffit Vents

I’ll start with soffit vents because they're a bit different than the others. Soffit vent grilles are located parallel to the eaves. They work as an inlet vent to bring fresh air in. This helps push the warm air up so it can escape through higher ventilation systems. They work in tandem with all of the passive ventilation systems.

Box Vents

This is the type of system my roof has. It is fitted with six box vents altogether. This type of ventilation system is installed just below the ridge vent of the roof. When roofers install it, they cut a circular hole in the decking. A metal box is installed over the hole. The box prevents bugs, animals, and rain from getting in.

Box vents work but, since they aren’t at the peak of the roof, they aren’t the most efficient system. As Jeff pointed out during the inspection, my vents, in particular, are worse than average because the builders blocked the vent with styrofoam, so even less air can escape. No wonder it’s so hot upstairs!

Off Ridge Vents

Off ridge vents are very similar to box vents. The biggest difference here is that they are used primarily on commercial roofs and metal roofs. They can be used on residential properties as well.

Gable-end Vents

These vents are installed just below the peak of your gable. To prevent critters from entering, the vent is closed off with a mesh screen. These vents act as an intake and output for air. The amount of air that enters is based on the wind and temperature.

Ridge Vents

Last, but certainly not least, is our champion, the ridge vent. Ridge vents are installed at the very peak of the roof. Because it’s at the very top of your roof, it maximizes the amount of hot air that escapes. Ridge caps are placed over the vent to allow the air to escape. Our sleek design is made to blend in with the rest of the roof.

The Plan

In the very near future, I am proud to say that I will be putting a Klaus on my house. During the inspection, multiple nail pops were found. Thankfully, Jeff was able to nail them back down and prevent further leakage until the roof is replaced. My estimate includes replacing the damaged decking in at least four places. They’ll also improve my ventilation. Their plans include replacing my box vents with ridge vents. They predict that my temperatures should stabilize and that I won’t have drastic differences upstairs. That will ease the pressure on my HVAC unit making it more energy efficient. Who wouldn’t be excited about that?

Is It Time To Replace Your Gutters?

For many homeowners, gutter maintenance is one of those things that are out of sight, out of mind. Unless something dramatic happens, they often go ignored. This spells disaster for the health of your home. A gutter that doesn’t work properly causes many problems to the house. It can damage your siding and your window panes. Eventually, it will cause problems to the inside of your home. The question homeowners face is, “Do I need to replace my gutters, or can I simply put a better gutter guard on them?” Let us break that down for you.

Signs You Need To Replace Your Gutters

There are many visual ways to tell if it’s time to replace your gutters vs. repairing them. Below is a list of the eight examples.

Cracked Gutters or Gutters With Holes

The average lifespan of gutters is 20 years. If they’re approaching that age or they’ve already exceeded it, you should start looking to see if you can see any cracks. If they’re large enough to be seen from the ground it’s time to invest in a new system. If you can’t see them but you see puddles or pools around your foundation after a heavy rain, give us a call. We’ll be able to give you a closer inspection so you don’t have to get on the ladder to find the small cracks.

Pooling Water Next to Your Foundation

The purpose of gutters is to direct rainwater away from your foundation. If you’re noticing pools and puddles next to your home, one of the first places you should inspect is your gutter system. It’s a great indicator that your gutters may not be functioning.

So what is all that pooling water doing to your home anyway?

This Woodlawn homeowner told us that when it rains water leaks from the seams causing large
puddles underneath the gutter.

Mold on Your Interior Foundation

Water next to your foundation is never a good thing. The pressure often causes foundation problems. The most obvious problem is water intrusion in your basement or crawlspace. If the gutters aren’t replaced and you constantly have water pooling next to your foundation eventually it’s going to cause high levels of humidity in your basement or crawl space. Because concrete, drywall, and stone are organic materials mold and mildew will make themselves at home in your house. If your noticing mold, mildew, or any other fungal growth in your home it’s time to replace those gutters!

Rust

If you’re spotting rust on your gutters odds are they’ve reached their age limit. Even if they haven’t rusted out yet it’s a sign that your gutters don’t have much life left in them. If they are left to continue to rust out, eventually the gutters will start to get holes in them or crack, rendering your system useless.

Stress or Fractures at the Seam

Seams are the weakest point in a gutter system. If your gutters are weighed down by clogs or if they get hit by branches in a storm, this is often the first place a gutter will buckle. We eliminate those weak spots by offering seamless gutters.

Peeling Paint

There are many reasons paint can peel. One of the main reasons though is moisture. Moisture causes paint to lose its adhesiveness. If you’ve painted your gutters or the outside of your home is painted and you notice bubbling paint there’s a good bet something is wrong with your gutters. If there is a hole, crack, or clog in your gutter the water is likely being directed in the wrong place. It’s a likely bet that your gutters are the reason behind your bubbling paint.

Wood Rot

Like bubbling paint, wood rot is a symptom of continuous exposure to water. If you suspect gutter problems inspect the wood outside your home. If you have any wood framing or window panes, it’s a good bet you’ll find the symptoms if your gutter has been leaking for a long time.

If you’re experiencing wood rot, you’ll be able to tell by the breakdown of the organic material. If you have a light-colored stain on your wood, you can generally see a brown, white, or black discoloration on the wood. If it’s a bad enough case, usually the wood will be brittle or spongey.

Missing Hardware

If you’ve started noticing screws, nails, and fasteners on the ground near the gutters it’s a good sign that your system is past its prime. Nails and screws can be replaced, but if they just continue to pop out shortly after, it quickly becomes more of a hassle than it’s worth.

Do you love cottagecore? If so, you probably like the way moss looks on your roof. It makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. But, there is a dark secret behind the aesthetic. Moss can damage your roof in several ways that will cause leaks and damage to your home. This blog will explain what moss is, why it’s so harmful, and the various ways to get rid of it.

What is Moss?

Moss is a plant in the Bryophyta division. PlantSnap.com explains that these plants are spore-producing nonvascular organisms. No vascular system means the plant doesn’t grow upright. It stays low to prevent drying out. Instead of soaking up the water and nutrients with roots, it absorbs the water and nutrients it needs.

Moss is a decomposer. It is so good at its job moss is one of the few things that can decompose rock. It can do this because moss doesn’t have a root system. It is therefore capable of growing into the very surface it grows on.

Moss grows in environments that are moist and heavily shaded. This allows them to absorb and retain the maximum amount of nutrients and moisture. Does this environment sound familiar to you? Just think of the north-facing section of your roof. If you have moss on your roof, that’s the most likely place you’ll find it.

How is Moss Damaging Your Roof?

Your roof is a flat surface made of partially organic materials. If you add the shade of a tree and a bit of moisture, you've created the perfect environment for moss. This presents a problem because like rock and stone the moss will grow into the shingles. Furthermore, it can grow under the shingles and break the seal between the shingle layers. The growth patterns of moss can cause issues because of its sponge-like nature. Whether it’s growing into the shingle or under the layer of shingles it introduces moisture to the underlayment of the roof and can potentially cause leaks and wood rot.

Moss Removal Tips

As with any roofing project you do on your own it is vital to use the utmost caution for your safety. That said if you have moss on your roof and want to clean it off but don’t want to pay someone to do it there are some DIY techniques.

Manual Moss Removal

Carefully cut the moss off of your roof with a round filed knife. If the moss is growing under the shingle reseal it with black plastic cement. Sweep the removed moss off of your roof.
Some people use a leaf blower to remove debris from their roof. This is a good time to inspect your roof for any signs of moss growth. If you find it use a soft brush to gently remove the moss from your roof.

Use Chemicals to Clean and Kill the Moss

An eco-friendly way to clean moss off your roof is to use vinegar to kill the moss.
Softwash your roof with a bleach product. A light case of moss should die within a few days and flake off after it dries out.
You can also kill the moss by changing the PH of the roof. This is done by mixing household products like baking soda, baking powder, salt, soap, and bleach, with water and applying it to the affected area. For moss to thrive it requires a ph of 5.0-6.0. Raising the PH will effectively kill moss.

Some consumers think sweeping moss under the proverbial rug by simply putting a new layer of shingles on the roof is an ok solution. In reality, this can do more damage to your roof because you’re not fixing the problem. The covered-up moss will continue growing and absorbing moisture, voiding the benefit of a new layer of shingles.

Exterior Signs It's Time To Put A Klaus On Your House

Time and weather are your roof’s biggest adversaries. According to Bob Vila of This Old House, the average lifespan of an asphalt shingled roof is between 15-30 years. Hail, wind, and debris are the biggest causes of roof damage caused by weather. All it takes is one windstorm going 58-74 MPH to rip some shingles off completely!

How can you tell if it’s time to replace your roof? There are some telltale signs if you know what you’re looking for. Some damage can be seen from ground level, depending on the style of the house, but in most cases, you’ll need to climb on your roof, use a drone camera, or invite a professional roof inspector out to do so for you.

Buckling, Curling, and Missing Shingles

After a big storm, the easiest way to tell if you’ve experienced roof damage is to look at the property around you. Are there shingles on the ground? If your roof is visible from ground level, you can tell just by looking up. A missing shingle should be noticeable.

A curling shingle will do so at the corners. This lifts the shingle away from the roof and exposes it to the elements. This invites water seepage into the underlayment and will eventually cause damage to the interior.

Buckling causes similar damage as curling. A buckling shingle will sag in the middle. That creates a gap between the shingle and the roof. Again, leaving the roof exposed to the elements and your house vulnerable to water damage.

Missing Granules

IKO, a leading asphalt shingle-manufacturer, explains that asphalt shingles are made from asphalt, fiberglass, sealant, and stone granules. The granules help protect your roof because they are resistant to blue-green algae growth. Over time weather will take its toll on the stone granules. It causes them to become loose and start falling off. If you’re cleaning your gutters and see handfuls of granules, you'll know it’s time to invest in a new roof.

Loose or Rusted Step Flashing

Step flashing is a piece of metal that’s installed every time the roof meets a vertical wall. You’ll find step flashing most commonly between the shingles and sidewall at chimneys and dormers. Its main job is to direct water towards the shingles and keep it from penetrating the roof.

Clogged Downspouts and Gutters

It’s easy for a clogged downspout or gutter to go unnoticed. As a homeowner, we get caught up in the obvious tasks and don’t think about checking the hidden signs of damage until it’s too late. Annual maintenance on your gutters and downspouts is important because water will always choose the path of least resistance. You want that path to be your gutters. Otherwise, that path will end up under your shingles, gutter apron, and flashing.

5 Signs Your Roof is Leaking

Did the storms we had earlier this month leave you concerned about the conditions of your roof? If you have a roof leak, it's important to catch the warning signs as soon as possible. The cost of a roof leak and interior repairs adds up quickly. We wanted to help set your worries at ease by giving you a list of symptoms to look out for if your roof is leaking.

Discoloration

One of the first signs you’ll be able to notice is discoloration on your ceiling. When exposed to water, your drywall or plaster will begin to develop dark or light brown stains. Think of it as a tea or coffee stain. This discoloration could develop as quickly as 1-24 hours after exposure to water. A new spot on your ceiling will still feel firm to the touch.

If a roof leak goes untreated, you’ll begin to notice rings indicating long exposure to dripping water. The structural integrity of that spot will deteriorate over time as well. The material will feel spongy. You may even be able to poke your finger right through the wall.

Bubbling Paint
