In Cincinnati, OH, we replaced a roof for a home and a detached garage. The home's existing decking system had mold growth all along the backside, which our Representative noticed inside of the attic upon the initial inspection. This mold was a result of a poor ventilation system, as well as an active leak. We ended up replacing the roof with our 50 year "no-leak" system, which of course, comes with a 50 year warranty against leaks. When we replace a roof, we have to make sure the decking/sheathing is up to code before we can start to install the new roofing system. As you can see, on this roof, we had to replace most of the boards closest to the edges. The edges are oftentimes the most susceptible to water damage.

This was the section of the home where mold growth was prevalent. The gable ventilation system was not doing a great job at keeping the attic dry. This photo also shows the blue decking tape we use along the seams between each board. This tape is important, because to keep the decking up to code, you have to keep a slight 1/8-inch to 1/4-inch gap between each board. This gap allows the boards to breathe and shrink depending throughout the year. The tape covers this gap.

After getting the decking up to code, we then installed our 50 year underlayment system. This system consists of our white Ice & Water Sealoron shield, and our tan synthetic Velora underlayments. The white shield was applied six feet up from all edges, valleys, and around the skylight system, as these areas are most susceptible to water buildup and ice dams. This shield underlayment has a gluey backing, which helps create a watertight seal when we nail the shingles over it.

Our tan synthetic felt underlayment was fastened everywhere else on the roof. Both underlayments are manufactured by our Parent Company, Klaus Roofing Systems.
